This monument which was erected in 1858 records the achievements of the monk Baekpa. Because the government of the Joseon Dynasty had suppressed Buddhism in favor of Confucianism, Baekpa, the suzerain of Hwaeom Buddhism, made an effort to revive the stagnated Buddhism. The inscription on the monument was written by the noted calligrapher, Gim Jeoung-hui. He wrote about the monk Baekpak: "Baekpa was so poor that he could not afford to have a patch of land; however, he was so strong as to press Sumi mountain". This monument contains Baekpa's firm spirit to revive declined Buddhism of the Joseon Dynasty.
