It is estimated that this Buddha image, which is the largest of its type in Korea, was carved during the Goryeo dynasty. It is thought to be Maitreya. At 6m above the ground, the Buddha is seated with his legs crossed. He is 5m tall and 3m wide. It has a stair-shaped cornerstone carving lotus flowers. The hole over the Buddha's head is where the pillar of the tall building, called Dongbulam was placed. There is an alcove at the edge of the pit of the stomach. In it was found a secret book written by the monk Geomdan. A legend states that during the late Joseon dynasty, when Yi Seo-gu, governor of Jeolla Province, attempted to open the alcove, a thunderstorm suddenly closed it. There was a phrase as "Governor of Jeolla Province, Yi Seo-gu opens" at the preface of the book. Son Hwa-jung, a leader of the Donghak peasant army, took the book away at the end of the nineteenth century.
