Mai Mountain

ADDR : Maryeong-myeon Jinan-gun Jeollabuk-do

TYPE : Remembrances of the city/town - 66

Appointed Date : 1983.08.24
These two peaks are situated at the border of the Jinan plateau and the Sobaek Mountains, which form the watershed of the Seomjin river and Gum river. The two peaks, composed of bare rock without soil, are called Mai mountain because they resemble horse's ear. Male Mai peak in the east is 667m above sea level, and female Mai peak in the west is 673m above sea level. There is a crevice called the Hwaam Cave where spring water gushes out. Although they are rock mountains, rare shrubs such as a row of spindle trees grow sparsely. There are historic temples such as Eunsu temple near the mountain, Geumdang temple, and so forth. In the southern valley of the mountain, cherry blossoms grow alongside the brook and come into full bloom in spring.
