Going towards east 8km from Imsil, you would arrive Seongsu-myeon(a town ship) famous for Sochungsa where 28 loyalist including commander Ri-seokyong were enshrined. Here you can see two peaks rising on the range of Sobaek Mountains, one peak is Seongsusan other is Palgongsan.
867m, above the sea level, of course not so high. But if you met with the whole beautiful view on its top you would suddenly have the feeling of solemnity and realize why they call the mountain a famous one. Its name consists of two Chinese characters, one ‘Seong’ means ‘Holiness’, other ‘Su’ means ‘Long Life’, and bearing historical reason.
‘Seong’ was surely attached only to the king, utmost person or his or her belongs.
Doseon who was respected in Goryeo Kingdom as a national guest and famous for his learned geomancy, after seeing the mountain he said, it is holy enough to host an Emperor.
Reaching Songdo(the capital of Goryeo), Doseon recommended Wanggeon(the first king of Goryeo Kingdom) he accepted his suggestion and he began to pray in this mountain with Doseon for 100 days for the dream he embraced. Wanggeon completed resulted nothing for 100 days but he wasn’t disappointed and continued his pray more three days after cleaning his body, surprisingly he suddenly saw revelation from Gwaneum.
That revelation led Wanggeon into the throne, they said. Wanggeon was wo joyful that wrote straight as Hwangidam(means a joyful pond) and Doseon built a hermitage named Doseonam to memorialeze it forever. The story, they said, has been recorded in Danilseonsagi(China Dang’s records).
Hwanhidam, which is said Wanggeon wrote on the large rock, would be handed down forever of long as the existence of Seongsusan.
Another founding story followed by Ri-seonggye, founder of Joseon Kingdom, the story began from Muhakdaesa’s suggestion to general Ri-seonggye to pray for 100 days in Swongsusan.
Just in time, Ri-seonggye had been sent as Jeongwiseonsa for destroying invading Japanese forces in September 1380, the last reign of Goryeo, On triumphal returning, he practiced the 100day’s pray as suggested by Muhakdaesa, and they said he dreamed a great dragon symbolizing his throne and he embraced the aspiration to ascend to the king.
Afterwords, Ri-seonggye named Samcheongdon for that place, and wrote it on the rock as Wanggeon wrote Hwanhidam, both ascended to the throne, Goryeo and Joseon respectively.
After Ri-seonggye ascended to the throne renamed the hermitage as Sangiam and he built Eopilhak and he had his writing kept in that pavilion, Seongsusan is so famous that no one to equal it, thick wooded, running clean water along its waist.
I think it needs to have those stories bearing the foundations of two kingdom and existing legacies bearing Hwanhidam and Samcheongdong researched as soon as possible.
The people of Imsil county proud of Seongsusan having been being a bases for loyalist commander Ri-seokyeong’s combats against Japanese for national salvation and Sangiam also being a center of loyalists.
Seeing Honam loyalists’ vowing on the rock.
“The song of Justice and sincere heart are echoing in the sky with the integrity of Seonjukgyo.”
I’m seeing an illusion of those days and crying loudly with the Late courageous loyalist
