Seonunsa Temple

  Seonunsa temple is famous as the natural beauty and old temple. This temple is one of the two most important temple of Jogye order of Jeollabuk-do together with Geumsansa temple.
In regard to its establishment, it is said that the Zen priest Geomdan and the Most Reverend Priest Uiun built in 577. (24th year of King Wideok’s reign of Baekje Kingdom)
According to 「Seonunsa Sajeokgi, which was chronological table of this temple was described by Im Sangwo in 1794 (the 18th year of King Jeongjo), King Jinheung of Silla Kingdom gave up his throne and came to here to established Seonunsa temple. King Jinheung established Jungaeam and Dosolam small temple at the above mountain of Jinheunggul cave and the lower part of Manwoldae for eternal life of
Princes Jungae and Empress Dosol.
According to the record, the Zen priest Hyojeong rebuilt in 1318 (the 5th year of King Chungsuk) and in 1354 (the 3rd year of King Gongmin), and the Zen priest Hyaengjo did in 1474 (the 5th year of King Seongjong of Joseon Dynasty).
But it was burn down during the Jeongyujaeran, the Second Japanese Invasion of Korea, after that in 1614 (the 6th year of King Gwanghaegun), general Mujang Song Seokjo made priest Wonju rebuild till 1619 for 5 years.
Seonunsa temple was in great scale at one time with 89 monk’s cell, 24 cave and 189 dormitories, and this temple so prospered to establish King Seongjong’s private room in spite of the repress Buddhism and respect Confucianism policy of Joseon Dynasty and When the temple shut command was issued in King Taejong, it was preserved for praying national prosperity and the welfare of the people.
In Seonunsa temple, there are total 19 cultural assets that fine treasures including golden-seated statue of Budhisativa, three Natural monuments headed by camellia forest and the others local cultural assets.
Opening hours 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer.
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter.
