About North Cholla Province

North Cholla Province is well known as a place with many rivers and a vast open field of fertile soil and has advanced a long history and shining culture from the Old Stone Age. During Samhan Period, most area of this district belonged to Mahan and to Baekjae for Three Kingdom Period, and Jeonju, the central city of Cholla, was a capital place of Later Baekjae Dynasty for Later Three Kingdom Period.

It was called "Kang-Nam-Do" under King Seongjong in Koryo Dynasty and "Hae-Yang-Do" under 9th year of King Hyonjong and the name, "Cholla" was created with mixing Chon, an abbreviation form for Jeonju, and La, an initial form for Laju.


Upon a foundation of Chosun Dynasty, Cholla District became an origin place of the dynasty to play a key role in its history, and especially, Cholla Gamyoung(; military base/ located at the former provincial office) was set up to control over 3 provinces such as South & North Cholla and Jeju Island.
When the war, "Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592" was broke out, Cholla Province drove away the enemy and protected the vast rice field of the district to win the battle.
An old saying "No Honam (;another expression for Cholla Province), No nation" got derived from the historic fact.
Meanwhile, among the authentic historic records of Choson Dynasty which were separately kept in 4 different places, all records in 3 places were lost by the battle but only one which was protected by the thorough historic spirit of Cholla people was kept in safety to be finally listed as one of the "World Recording Cultural Asset".
In 1894, "Jip-Gang-So", the civilian self-governing body was established in Cholla for the first time in Korea and managed where the famous "Donhak Farmers' Movement" was broke out and the flame of a resist-Japanese movement and national salvation was flared up.
Cholla Province which has been well known for excellent dishes, many attractive features, and beautiful old ballad has preserved the cultural originality to peculiar to Korean People in a way as it was in old tomes. Moreover, the district is also proud of the blessed natural scenery.
Entering the Pan Yellow Sea Era in 21st Century, Cholla Province is highly promised to play a key role in leading the industrial developing drive. Based on its excellent traditional culture Cholla will take a strong stand as an advance base to lead the new industrial movement active in Northeast Asia and go for the bright future with its infinite potential power.
 
 
 District of Natural Advantage and Tradition
Jeollabuk-do, which is situated in central southwest part of the Korean Peninsula, is bordered by Gyeongsang-do province to the east, Jeollanam-do to the south, and Chuncheong-do to the north. Especially it touches the Yellow Sea (or West Sea) on the west. Owing to the extensive Saemangeum reclamation development, Jeollabuk-do will have a new outer harbor for domestic and international shipping and will take a major role in interchange with the neighboring China. The area of the province of 8,042??, amounting to 8.1%of the whole nation.

It takes about 3hours from Seoul to Jeonju by the Saemaeul Line and express bus and it enable to enjoy one-day tour taking its natural beauty spots. Jeollabuk-do satisfies as tour site by expanding of foundation facilities of tourism such as Muju Resort. Jeollabuk-do has natural advantage beauty spots such as Mt. Jirisan, Naejangsan,
Deokyusan, Byeonsan National Park, Mt. Daedunsan, Moaksan, Maisan, seonunsan Provincial Park, Mt. Gangcheongsan, Jangansan County Park and so forth.
   
Generous and Native Provincial People
The population of Jeollabuk-do is 2 million and about 21% inhabitants work at farming, forestry and fishing. The people are generous and native. They keep the traditional Korean decorum and precious classical performing arts and folk music have been handed down to them.

 District of Traditional Special Products
Jeollabuk-do is a treasurehouse of national wide famed special products such as Taegeukseon and Hapjukseon fan, dropwort, Igangju and Imiju wine of Jeonju area, the Dongsang dried persimmons, persimmons vinegar, jujube of Wanju area, jewelry and Hwangdeung stone art of Iksan area, raw fish and cucumber Jjangajji (sliced cucumber with soy) of Gunsan area, Geumsan writing brush and Sinpung Janggu(Korean musical instrment) of
Gimje area, Baekhap clam and rice of Simpo Harbor, Bokjori of Jeongeup area, laver, rice, Baekhap clam, Gaeam Baemboo Salt of Buan area, Bokbunja wine, Pungcheon eel, watermelon, Gosu porcelain of Gochang area, apple and walnut of Muju area, Ginseung, Pyogo mushroom of Jinan area, apple and agalmatolite, Schizandra fruit of Jangsu area, woodenware of Namwon area, tobacco pipe, Korean Paper and Gwanchon red pepper of Imsil area, red pepper paste of Sunchang area and so forth. In particular tourists should not miss trying local foods like the famous Jeonju Bibimbap that assorted vegetable and meat mixed with rice and Sunchang red pepper paste.
   
 Home of Plentiful Cultural Assets
Cultural and athletic events held in Jeollabuk-do are as follow: Jeonju Sori Festival, World Calligraphy Biennale, Jeonju International Film Festival, Chunhyangje Festival, Pungnamje Festival, Jeonju Daesaseupnori, and '2002 World Cup Game.

In addition, total six of national treasures including Gochang dolmen
sites, which are registered as a world heritage, are preserved in this district, such as Mireukjeon hall of Guemsansa temple, stone pagoda of Mireuksa temple site, Baekjangam three story stone pagoda of Silsangsa temple, book of meritorious retainer to found the state, five story stone pagoda and discovered relics of Wanggung-ri, iksan and 36 main volumes of Daebang Gwangbul Hwaeomgyeong, etc.
